Train 18 has been
named the Vande Bharat Express in
recognition of the “vandaniya” work
done by Indian Railways. The ‘Make in India’ Vande Bharat Express has been
designed and developed in a record time of 18 months by ICF Chennai at a cost
of Rs 97 crore.
According to Indian
Railways, with economies of scale the manufacturing cost will be half that of a
comparable import. Given the world-class standards of the engine-less Vande
Bharat Express and its cost advantage, the Train 18 set has already generated export
interest from several countries.
The 16-coach all
air-conditioned Vande Bharat Express will have both Executive and non-Executive
chair cars. The fares of Vande Bharat Express are 40-50% higher than the base
fare of Shatabdi Express.
Some
Features:
- The Vande Bharat
Express experience begins before you even get on the train. The sliding
automatic doors come with a sliding footstep that opens up when the train
arrives at the platform.
- The Vande Bharat
Express has 16 coaches in all, with a capacity for over 1,100 people. This
includes two executive chair cars with a maximum seating capacity of 56 and 14
non-executive chair cars which can seat 78 passengers.
- CCTV Cameras to
monitor movement of passengers around the doors, as well as for security within
the coach.
- The Vande Bharat
Express has zero discharge bio-vacuum toilets with touch-free bathroom
fittings.
- You don’t have to
stare out of the window pensively watching the world go by anymore. You can
stay glued to your screens for as long as you like and take advantage of the
on-board Wi-Fi, infotainment facilities and GPS-based passenger information
system.
- Driven by a
self-propulsion module sans a separate locomotive, Train 18 or T18, is capable
of running at a speed of up to 160 kmph. Train 18 comes with technical features
for enhanced quick acceleration.
- Developed by
Chennai-based Integral Coach Factory in 18 months, the fully AC train is
designed in such a way that passengers can see the driver's cabin.
- Though the
maximum speed of Train 18 is 160 kmph against 130 kmph of Shatabdi, the issue
could be the suitability of the existing tracks. The tracks are being improved
and once the tracks are fit to suit Train 18's speed, it would reduce travel
time by around 15 per cent compared to Shatabdi.
- The footstep in a
coach's doorway slides outward when the train stops at a station enabling
passengers to alight safely with comfort. The footstep would adjust to the
variation in height between a train's floor and the platform.
