CWC 2019 : INDIAN TEAM AND THEIR TEAM COMBINATION

The fragile middle-order was brutally exposed by England and Bangladesh in two back to back matches of this World Cup.

India's failure to fix the middle-order problem has even made them pick the World Cup as the stage to experiment on the crucial number four slot.

And the pressure was huge on Rohit and Kohli when India lost KL Rahul early while chasing 338 against England on Sunday. Against a fine English bowling attack, Rohit and Kohli were forced to be cautious in the first 10 overs because one more wicket at that stage would have been catastrophic, especially considering the chaos in the middle-order.

That middle-order has remained India's Achilles heel and it's the reason behind their poor record in big chases.

As India is already qualified for Semi Final, India may try this combination:

1. Rohit Sharma
2. Mayank Agarwal/KL Rahul
3. Virat Kohli

4. Rishabh Pant
5. M.S.Dhoni
6. Hardik Pandya

7. Ravindra Jadeja
8. Bhuvaneshwar Kumar

9. Md Shami
10. Y.Chahal/Kuldeep Yadav
11. J.Bumrah

RBI meets expectations, cuts Repo Rate by 25 BPs

Repo rate is the rate at which RBI lends money to commercial banks. Any cut in this rate, will ease stress in the economy and increase liquidity as banks can borrow at a cheaper rate. This rate also becomes the base rate at which banks determine their own lending rates.

A lot of experts and agencies expected a 25 basis points rate cut, if not more. The stock markets have been rallying on expectations that the banks might get a lease of life, amidst many problems that they face.

Yet, there are also doubts whether the benefits of this rate cut will be transmitted by the banks to the borrowers. It has happened many times that the banks absorbed the rate cut advantages without passing on the benefits to the industry or the consumers.
“We expect RBI to spell clearly its stand on how a large cut if impacted will lead to better transmission: will the banks be now mandated for benchmarking their asset and liability moving together? Otherwise, banks will not rate cut deposit rates given the huge currency leakage,” said Dr. Soumya Kanti Ghosh, Group Chief Economic Adviser, State Bank of India.

The rate cut was much expected yet is believed to fall short for a stimulus that the economy desperately needs. India’s fourth quarter GDP numbers came in at 5.8%, which was lower than expectations. Many experts have revised the growth numbers for the year downwards, and expect the pressure to continue till October.

“We see further downside risks to growth as we await the reforms to begin bearing fruit in the medium term. We expect 2019-20 GDP growth to remain muted at 6.8%, with slowdown in the first half likely to continue and some improvement in consumption and investment likely in the second half,” said Upasna Bhardwaj, Senior Economist at Kotak Mahindra Bank.

As per SBI’s predictions, the growth rate will stay below 6%, at least in the first half of 2019-20 and will only recover in the second half. “Global growth is fast turning out to be an Achilles’ Heel,” added Ghosh.

Indian Railways AC passengers note...! New muslin wrap dohars with traditional art to make travel hygienic

Indian Railways focuses on hygiene! Facing criticism from the Comptroller & Auditor General of India (CAG), Indian Railways has decided to do away with blankets in its air-conditioned coaches. Instead, muslin wraps or dohars will be provided to passengers travelling in AC coaches of Indian Railways trains.

According to a circular issued by the national transporter, all zonal railways have been directed to gradually replace blankets in AC coaches with dohars that are easily washable at frequent intervals.

We have directed zonal railways to replace blankets in all AC coaches. This is because blankets are more difficult to maintain in terms of hygiene and cannot be washed too many times,” a railway official told Financial Express Online. “We are yet to ascertain the washing frequency of the new muslin wraps or dohars that will be used, it may even be possible to clean them once every run,” the official added.

However, keeping in mind the needs of senior citizens and other passengers, the onboard staff will be given a stock of blankets for those who need them.

Not only that, all railway zones have been asked to consider the option of promoting the local art and culture of the area, by imprinting the new muslin wraps with traditional patterns. The railway zones are currently studying the feasibility of the proposal on promoting local art. Soon passengers in AC coaches may be provided with muslin wraps boasting of traditional art and culture patterns.

Last year, Indian Railways had introduced disposable pillow covers in some trains on a experimental basis. The national transporter is also regulating the temperature inside AC coaches so that passengers don’t feel the need for a woollen blanket. The move to introduce muslin wrap dohars, which are suitable for newly regulated temperature and can be washed frequently, is another step in the direction to maintaining hygiene.

The Return of Technocracy in Indian Politics

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has overturned perceptions of being anti-technocracy by inducting former Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar into his new Cabinet as the Union minister for external affairs. This lateral induction of a career diplomat has been widely welcomed.

For a government that has been trying to get various domain experts into the ranks of the bureaucracy, this signals an emphasis on expertise as a criterion over the usual considerations.

Jaishankar is regarded not only as a foreign policy maven, but also a sharp strategic mind with a clear view of a complex world full of divergent interests. As an officer of the Indian Foreign Services, he was among those closely involved in the Indo-U.S. Nuclear Deal of 2008 that New Delhi struck with the U.S. under the Manmohan Singh government.

Under the Modi government, he reportedly helped find a way out of the 2017 Doklam crisis at our border with China. Armed with almost three decades of diplomatic experience, he has been our ambassador to Beijing as well as Washington, and this qualifies him well to help New Delhi pursue India’s interests overseas as a cold war gets underway between China and the U.S.

The world is currently in geopolitical flux, and we need someone in the foreign ministry who combines political acumen with diplomatic dexterity.

Modi’s choice of Jaishankar suggests the government is ready to put the country’s best resources at work in a field no country can afford to ignore. It also comes as a rebuke to those who feared we’re turning too inward for our own good.

After battering Odisha, Cyclone Fani enters West Bengal, triggers heavy rains

After wreaking havoc in Odisha, claiming 10 lives and unleashing massive destruction on its way, Cyclone Fani entered West Bengal post-midnight on Saturday.
The weakened cylonic storm, downgraded to 'severe cyclonic storm', has crossed Kharagpur and is currently moving in the north-east direction with a wind speed of 90 km/hour. The storm now lies close to Arambagh in Hooghly district, and is 40 km west of Kolkata.

"It is very likely to continue to move north-northeastwards during next 12 hours and emerge into Gangetic West Bengal with a wind speed of 80-90 kmph gusting to 105 kmph by the early morning of May 4," said the India Meteorological Department in a statement.

After entering Bengal, Fani lashed towns and cities including Digha, Haldia, Tajpur, Mandarmani, Sandehskhali, Contai, Diamond Harbour, Bankura, Sriniketan, Asansol, Dumdum and Alipore. Apart from Kharagpur and Kolkata, effects of the storm could also be felt in Burdwan district. Trees were uprooted, power and telecom lines snapped, metal hoardings gave away as the storm swept through Bengal.

Parts of Kolkata and surrounding areas received moderate to heavy rainfall since Friday afternoon.  The rains are expected to continue till early Saturday. No loss of life or any injury has been reported from Bengal so far.

"The severe cyclonic storm Fani entered Bengal at 12.30 a.m. through Odisha`s Balasore. It crossed Kharagpur packing a wind of 70-80 kmph, gusting to 90 kmph," Regional Meteorological Centre`s Deputy Director General Sanjib Bandyopadhyay told news agency IANS. "It is likely to continue further in north, north east direction, and reach the east Burdwan-Hooghly border, and through Nadia go to Bangladesh on Saturday afternoon, weakening into a cyclonic storm, after having triggered rains," he added.

The most powerful tropical storm to hit India in 20 years, Cyclone Fani pummeled through coastal Odisha with wind speeds of over 200 kmph on Friday but failed to cause widespread death and destruction due to massive pre-emptive measures taken by the state government and other agencies. The death toll touched 10, with over 160 injured, as officials awaited information from far-off regions.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik held a review meeting with senior officials on the destruction caused by cyclonic storm Fani in the state. “In the last 24 hours, 12 lakh people have been evacuated to safer locations and they are being taken care of in shelters,” Patnaik told media, adding that full assessment of damage will be possible only after it crosses the state.

The evacuees have been accommodated in over 4,000 shelters, including 880 specially designed cyclone centres where free cooked food is being served to them, he said.
Flight and train operations were affected with around 220 trains on Howrah-Chennai route have been cancelled keeping in view passengers' safety, an East Coast Railway (ECoR) official said. A red alert has been issued in coastal areas and fishermen have been asked not to venture into the sea.

On the other side of the border, Bangladesh too braced for the cyclone, evacuating over five lakh people from coastal areas.

8 Ways to Avoid Processed Food

1.Read the ingredients label before buying anything.

For years, if I even looked at food labels, I was reviewing items such as fat grams, calorie count and sugar content. While this may be important to some, the best indicator of how highly processed a food is can actually be found in the list of ingredients. If what you are buying contains more than 5 ingredients and includes a lot of unfamiliar, unpronounceable items you should reconsider before buying.

2.Increase your consumption of whole foods,

Especially vegetables and fruits. I am sure you’ve heard similar advice a thousand times, and I hate to tell you it is true. This will help to displace the processed foods in your diet, and will actually make your food selections in general very simple. No more counting calories, fat grams, or carbs when your only concern is selecting whole foods that are, as more the product of nature than “the product of industry.”*

3.Buy your bread from a local bakery.
I actually used to eat white bread, but what I bought for my husband from the grocery store was what I thought was whole-wheat bread. When we finally checked the ingredients and found 40 different items on the list, including white flour and sugar, we decided it was time for a change. Why would there be so many on the list if it only takes a handful of ingredients (like whole-wheat flour, water, yeast, and salt) to make bread?

4.In addition to your bread choice, when selecting foods like pastas, cereals, rice, and crackers always go for the whole-grain option. And don’t just believe the health claims on the outside of the box.  Read the ingredient label to make sure the product is truly made with only 100% whole grains – not a combination of whole grains and refined grains which is unfortunately how a lot of so-called “whole grain” products are made. The white flour or other refined grain alternative is simply high in calories and low in nutrition, which reminds me a little too much of sugar.

5.Avoid store-bought products containing high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and those “that have some form of sugar (or sweetener) listed among the top three ingredients.”* Despite the mixed research on if HFCS is really worse for you than good ol’ white sugar, it just happens to be “a reliable marker for a food product that has been highly processed”.

6.Don’t order off the kids’ menu.

The next time your family is out to dinner avoid the kids’ menu. Those selections are most often things like pre-made chicken nuggets, deep-fried French fries, pasta made with white flour, and so on. Instead try assembling some sort of side item plate with a baked potato and whatever vegetables your kid will eat and/or try sharing some of your meal.

7.Visit your local farmers’ market the next time you need to restock your fridge.
Not only will you find “food that is in season, which is usually when it is most nutritious”*, but you will also find a selection of pesticide-free produce and properly fed meat products. It is also better for our environment to purchase locally grown products as opposed to supermarket produce, which on average travels 1500 miles from the farm to your plate.

8.Lastly, “eat all the junk food you want as long as you cook it yourself.”

If you had to peel, chop and deep fry potatoes every time you wanted French fries then you might not eat them very often. Only eating “junk food” such as cakes, sweets, and fried foods as often as you are willing to make them yourself will automatically reduce your consumption.
